From Dr. Kristin Heeney - Lacrosse Players set their Sights on Eyewear

According to the Washington Post, lacrosse player in the NCAAs will have to wear protective googles for the playoffs during the 2004 season. The eyewear protective equipment becomes mandatory under US Lacrosse rules in 2005. Hockey, lacrosse, football, racquet sports players are all susceptible to eye injury. The Ontario Association fo Optometrists has an excellent resource for Protecting your Eyes and the Canadian Association of Optometrists and the American Optometric Association have petitioned the NHL to require a hockey visor (Letter to Mr. Gary Bettman, Commissioner, National Hockey League).

Motorola and Frog Design have designed one of the Coolest Inventions of 2003 with their Offspring Wearable prototypes. The sunglasses are expected to be available in 2006 and contain a digital camera, and a display for accessing your email or the Web. They also have an ear-piece that pops out of the side of the glasses, a wrist watch and a PDA.

From Dr. Kristin Heeney - OHIP Coverage is Changing

The Ontario Government has announced new OHIP coverage for Eye Examinations. On November 1, 2004, OHIP will no longer cover regular eye examinations for Adults aged 20 to 64 years. Additionally, a referral from your family physician will be required for OHIP eligible insured medical services (e.g., red eye, diabetes, glaucoma, etc.).

OHIP will continue to cover:

  • Children aged 0 to 19 years ? One full eye examination annually.
  • Seniors aged 65 and above ? One full eye examination annually.
